The nomenclature of maps is the means used to define geographical phenomena and to provide the basic orientation. It is divided into national and international. The national nomenclature of the Czech maps developed very complicatedly. Besides the geographic names used for the Czech territory which are not very problematic, other Czech names for geographic objects exist outside this territory (so called deep-rooted Czech names). They developed when there was a busy bilateral contact, and according to the intensity of this contact they maintained, developed or became extinct. They can be divided into three groups: those (1) which have no support iii the original language, (2) in which Czechizing was limited to the phonetic form, and (3) where the original name was translated. By these criterions a list of deep-rooted Czech names has been prepared which will be a guide for cartographical institutions for their choice especially for the school maps … celý popis
