The present study focuses on current discussions on Islam in the North Caucasus, and particularly on the relationship between so-called traditional forms of Islam and its more puritanical forms, specifically Salafism. in the second part, the mutual influences of Salafism and the socio-political situation are discussed and possible motives for participation in the Salafi scene among different parts of society are analyzed. Since the 1990s, the region has witnessed the growing presence of so-called Wahhabists, a term which actually includes a wide spectrum of Salafi movements from apolitical Islamic purists to radical jihadists. This has stimulated debate aobut what constitutes "culturally compatible" Islam and also brought into the limelight the rising popularity of Salafi ideas for some parts of society. … celý popis
